I am having problems aquascaping my aquarium. Right now I have a small amount of rocks in my tank, they are kind of rough and have some sharp edges and I recently read that this should be avoided (common sense huh?) I'm having problems finding rocks to purchase for my aquarium, lava rocks, slate, etc. I have looked at local fish stores but the rocks are very expensive, small and unattractive. I have slate in my backyard that I was going to use but when it gets wet it breaks up and I wouldn't put that in my tank for fear one of my fish will swallow a piece or it will be floating around my whole tank. Where do you buy your aquarium rocks from? Any suggestions would be a great help, thank you.

You can try a local landscapign/garden store. They often have rocks for a fairly cheap price. Also, I am not sure where you live but I live in a very rocky area so the backyard or local woods is a good place as well so long as you wash them well. My neighbor is putting an addition on thier house and right now they have a huge pile of dirt filled with rocks. I am thinking of taking a walk over there and snatching a few!!!

Creeks and streams are an excellent source, too--if you have none near, go on an expedition (just make sure it's ok with the landowner).
After walking up and down the creek with some 5 gallon buckets I manage to find plenty of sturdy stones. Some folks boil them; I bake them. Some drops of vinegar will inform you if they are stable or not. Stay away from the white quartz with red lines--the iron/clay will leech out and turn your water reddish. Good luck!!

If it fizzes up, its bad. Does nothing, its good.
