I have a 55gal tank stocked with 4 fish, two large goldfish, and 2 African Chilids. Its filter with two filters a Filstar XP3 and an Emperor 400. The Flistar is packed with foam in the bottom basket, filter floss in the 2nd basket, and 3 bags of carbon in the last. The Emperor has nothing but filter floss in the 2 refillable baskets it came with, I bought two more for the front, and the bio-wheels to take care of the bio load. I have had this problem every since I bought the tank, about 3 months ago. It’s never really cloudy just slightly hazy, it drives my nuts because my other tank always stay clear just with one little Aqauclear. I do 30% water changes every week and no the water doesn’t clear after the water change, it still has the hazy look to it. The only thing I have found that clears it up is this product by Kent; according to the bottle it attaches small particles together to help the filters filter it out. It works great but only lasts about 3 days and really stresses my fish out, so I hate to use it. My water tests as follows...
-Ammonia - 0
-Nitrite - 0
-Nitrate - 5.0
-Ph - 8.0
-Temp - 75 F

Tell me what you think plz...

What do you have as substrate? Same in both tanks? Any live plants?

The cichlids and goldfish are not compatible temperature wise.

Hum, even though it's been up for 3 months it sounds like New Tank Syndrome, ‘Small particles suspended in water causing a cloudy look/Floating silts from gravel especially in newly set up tanks.’

Air stones are a good idea, but it just may take time for the haze to go away.

Also, rbishop makes a very important point, Goldfish require cooler temps and Africans require warmer temps. Neither will thrive under the others conditions.

I have blue gravel in the bottom and yes same in both tanks, as for the goldfish they have been in there with the cichlids since they were babies, they never fight and there all growing very well. Anyway there not the goldfish you guys are thinking there just to feeder goldfish that my friend won at a fair and put in my tank as a joke and they have been there ever since. I wanted to get rid of them but nobody seems to want two 6in feeder goldfish. I all ready have 3 air stones going in there(have since the day I got the tank) and I tried shutting them off for a day and it still looked really hazy maybe even worse. How could the tank be going trough a cycle when my water tests good? I never heard of a 3 month cycle?

Any kind of goldfish is a coldwater fish. Thats what the problem is, not fighting or anything.
Try rinsing your filter media in some old tank water, maybe? Otherwise, its a waiting game.

Im preety sure i didnt ask about weather or not the goldfish was a good tank mate... I just wanted to no what was going on with the water and why its hazy looking, the tanks all ready cycled... what am i waiting for????

I am having the same problem with my tank. It is a 10 gallon tank about 2 months old with 6 zebra danios in it. I believe the cloudiness is from particles in the water that resulted from one of those weekend dissolving fish feeders i dropped in there. I think I need to just change my filter and let it filter out all the particles. Any comments? Also, I have come to realize through my internet reading that all chemical additives are crap and their is no substitute for frequent water changes and letting nature have its way with the cycle process.

yeah, you want to do water changes for sure, use a gravel vaccum for best results. You could rinse out your filter media in a container of used tank water if you wish, no need to get new media though. But, if this tank is still cycling (it might be - do you test your water?) wait on this till its done.
