55g Cichlid Tank Stocking

I'm wanting to start up a somewhat of a Cichlid community tank with my spare 55g and I am needing a bit of advice putting together a stocking list for it.

I would really like to put in a pair of Firemouth's but I don't know if any of the LFS in this area would have pairs. I'm kinda new to Cichlids so I was wondering what some good tankmates for a Firemouth would be. I was thinking something along the lines of:

1 Firemouth
1 Blue Acara (If I can find one)
5 Panda Cories
5 Rosy Barbs
1 Rainbow or Blood Parrot (My GF likes them)

What else could I put in there that wouldn't get eaten? I'd like to have a couple nice Cichlids in there if possible. Any help would be grealty appreciated. :thm:
 
if you go with a pair of firemouths and a blue acara
5 panda cories and a small school of rosy barbs.

I'd ditch the parrots and shoot for a small pleco/catfish. (bn)

if you get an actual pair of firemouths..that tank won't seem like it's big enough.
 
The acara can get pretty big. You could try some of the cryptoheros: nanoluteus, honduran red point, sajica, etc. They all stay pretty small. For me, the problem (eventually) is with the size of a grown-out acara.
 
I don't think any of the fish stores around here would have those. Do you think Petsmart would sell them? If I can't find any of those I'm not sure what to put in there.
 
check t see what the LFS has in stock or if they can order any..
then check compatibility
 
True, I'll go there tonight and write down a bunch of stuff and come back and do some more research and see whats up.
 
I just got back from the LFS and I made a pretty good list of the Cichlids they have there. I took out the ones that get too large.

Black Convict
Firemouth
Orange Blotch Peacock
Sunshine Peacock
Ice Blue
Jewel
Kenyi
Yellow Lab
Red Zebra

The last seven are african species, so I don't know how they'd go with firemouth. The convicts would work with them, however.
 
a jewel is african?
