Hi everyone,

Just bought a 46g bowfront today with stand!! I'm pretty ecstatic about it!

I have new lighting too, and a new filter. Ready to start assembly tomorrow.

My first question: For a planted tank substrate-Has anyone tried using "Pondcare Aquatic Planting Media" as a substrate? It is made of zeolite and arcillite, and is designed for planted ponds. Another substrate I am thinking of is 100% arcillite (aquatic planting soil by Profile/Schultz.

Secondly, here is the list of fish I currently have in different tanks (not all in one tank!!!!)... I'd like to put them all in the 46 as a community. Can I? Any warnings? Also, any ideas about what to add? I am thinking of selling off my 15 and keeping my 10 as a quarantine, maybe with a betta or something.

6 lemon tetras
1 dwarf neon gourami
2 panda cories
2 red phantom tetras
3 oto cats
6 neon tetras
2 blue rams (one female, one male)
2 neon dwarf rainbows (my mistake purchase from a while ago)

Thanks for your suggestions!

I bought more bows but was unsuccessful with them. They developed columnaris very quickly (I think I had the heat too high, as when I lowered it the others did not develop it... They were very small.

The LFS does not have any more phantoms. They seem fine as they 'school' with the lemon tetras at the moment.

Could I buy more bows, would they fit ok in my new tank? How many do they need (6?) to be happy?

What other fish could you see joining them?

Bows will make the other tetras unhappy with their constant activity, which is why I suggested you trade the bows in. Up to you, really.

Yes, rainbowfish do develop columnaris quite easily and especially if the heat is too high. I don't keep mine, unless they are fry, at anything over 79* and most of my tanks are at 75-77*. My Australian origin, blue eyes, and F1 affinis bows I keep at 79*, the rest are at 75*.

Kudos for knowing/finding out about the rainbow + heat = columnaris ;) Most people wouldn't know or research about that.
