Diana walstad's book Ecology of the Planted Aquarium (volume 2 now) is probably the best alternative book you will ever read for planted tanks. I would highly recommand it. Even if you prefer high tech, it's still an interesting read.
The link below is someone who followed diana walstad's book to the extreme. The person in the article appears to be not very knowledgable as evident by his observations, and went a bit over board in term of low tech but none the less it's a very interesting read, and more surprisingly the plants survived and growing.
Note: Skip the goldfish part at the beginning, that's just nonsense 4 gf in 20g with no filter lol. The good part is the 2 tank timeline that followed. Be sure to click on the progress links at the bottom of the article to see how the tanks were doing after x months.
