I keep getting conflicting advice and reading conflicting things on the web. ARGH!

I'm searching :look: for answers to THIS question:

I have a 30 gal tank, fake plants and with some cover and it currently has 5 tiger barbs (3 albino, and 2 green) what else can I put in with them? The tank has been cycled and its levels are just what they need to be.

Some say Cory catfish, the lfs owner told me gouramies or bala sharks (hello! I only have 29 gal tank...don't bala's get like 12 inches?? and I know tigers are nippers, won't they nip gouramies?). so I left the pet store with nothing, much to my daugthers dismay, but she is already attached to her barbs and I dont want to add anything that will kill or fight or just won't get along in general.

Thanks for the help. I've never kept Tigers before. I've raised mollies, which was fun, but a lot of work, and I've kept tanks of tetras. Never tried an agressive fish, but thought we'd give it a try.

try getting a bristlenose pleco. they are very cool little plecos, and looove to eat algae. as for some others, why not get into mollies again? corys are nice little bottom feeders, too. you could try some tetras, like neons or glows or rummynoses, the possibilities are endless.

I was afraid the tigers would nip the mollies fins...and I'm not really wanting to get into breeding livebearers again.

I was afraid to try neons, the tigers won't nip at them? they are really want my daugther wanted.

I think we will add a pleco or some corys...

Thanks for the help, any more suggestions welcome! :)

I disagree with fishcatch22.

I believe that tiger barbs should really be kept species only unless you have a very large tank, which you don't. They can be very aggressive, which you appear to already know. With a 30g tank you can add to the school of barbs and you can also add to the bottom of the tank -- cories and what have you. I would avoid anything mid or upper level.

My 2 cents

i have tiger barbs too, they school VERY beautifully. My advise to you is to get 3 more albino and 4 more green, rounding up 6 of each. Some other choices:

1) rosy barb
2) gold barb
3) armored cory cats (bronze, aenus)
4) zebra danio
5) TRUE sae

I agree with what has been said about the Tiger Barbs. My suggestion is to double your Tiger Barbs. Cory Cats should be fine with the Tiger Barbs.

Thanks everyone!

That is about what I decided...more tigers and then something on the bottom. I love the tigers so far...they are very active and intresting to watch. My daughter (its her first tank, she was only a baby when I had mollies...which might be why I felt they were too much work...molly babies and an human infant...LOL)

Very helpful.

well, i've kept tiger barbs with other types of surface and bottom dwellers, and they did fine, but, I think it was beginners luck. stick on the safe side since you're not sure.

i PM you about what to get

Why? So you can't be told that your wrong about what you said? So others who are trying to put with there tiger barbs can't see your reply and have to start a new thread, taking up bandwith (websites aren't free BTW, somebody has to pay for it)?

Biogal, can you please post what he said to get so others can say yae or nae on wether his info is corect or not.

Perhaps the PM is to suggest a fish that is now banned from the hobby. How about getting a Snakehead?

I'd suggest a small schooling fish for contrast. White clouds or small tetras (I don't personally like neons).

Something small, fast and short finned.

A few regular (not giants) danios?

you shouldnt have any tetras mixed with tigers they will get attacked, unless of course its in a pretty big planted tank and there are enough tigers together. Tigers are semiaggressive and some might even classify them as aggressive.

sorry, I deleted the PM before I came here...

But the gist of it was more tigers, and a bala (said it wouldn't live to get 12 inches, I have to disagree there, if you are taking care of your water quality and feeding appropriatly, assuming approriate tank size, they can and WILL live to be 12+ inches), and neons..there was something else in there to but I don't remember the other one. I just deleted it.

no, nothing banned...

And don't worry..I used to work with invasive aquatic species...so you can bet I won't have a snakehead...:-)

Anyway, I'm thinking to round out my schools of tigers, and add some cory cats. :-) If hubby wants the tetra's he's begging for...we'll have to get another tank.

thanks to the back button:

"is it a top fin tank? if i where you i whould get 3-5 more tiger barb. and get groumie and bala shark ( dont worrie the wont live as long to get up to 12'')
maybe the bristle nosie pelco will do good. try neons and swordtail even molly. the more tiger barb you have the less agressive ness the have."

Thats the pm.

NO BALA SHARK!!! I have no idea why he recommeded one.

He recommended it because they are a very popular fish and everyone and their Uncle wants one in their fish tank even if their fish tank is only 10 Gal. Don't get one unless you want to take it back to the store when it is 5 - 6 inches long and still growing.

Because kyle12 is a F&*&ING MORON. That's why he should be banned like any other miserable troll.
