how do i clean sand

i just bought an 80g tank and im going to get a couple wolf fish. i know im supposed to use sand for a substrate (i think substrate is the gravel or sand at the bottom of the tank) so can you clean sand the same way you do gravel with a gravel cleaner? or will the sand just come out the hose?
thank you.
 
Instead of putting the vac into the sand like you would the gravel, you just skim it over the top so it picks up stuff ontop of the sand.
