OK, I have tested my aqaurium water and the results are:

Nitrite - 0.3

Ammonia - 0

pH - 8.5

KH - 7

GH - 11

Are these good reading's for jewel cichlids, if not what chemicals should I use to lower and raise the readings,
thanks shane

your readings for any fish should be ammonia=0ppm, nitrites=0ppm, nitrates<40ppm.
do a google search on jewel cichlids to see what ph they prefer. Most fish will adapt to less than ideal ph unless they are very fragile. 8.5 is pretty high though. I wouldn't advise using chemicals to adjust your water though. Once you get those nitrites down, you should be fine for jewel cichlids as they are pretty tough fish from what I've heard.

there are numerous species of "jewel" cichlids and few of these will appreciate your water chemistry. they will not breed and will not exhibit their best color. one species however, Hemichromis letourneauxi will do well in alkaline water.

H. bimaculatus and H. lifalili will as well....I (and hundreds of other local aquarists) have kept and spawned (by the tens of thousands) both species in my local water, which is very similar to guppy 1's.

interesting. i've tried to spawn lifalili for years without success, while my letourneauxi are very prolific.

H. lifalili are a dime a dozen here (and our water is a near match for that of Lake Malawi)...a friend of mine just cleared the third spawn of perhaps 200 fry out of his tank...and he wasn't even trying.
