Yeah, all of us here love fish, but Im sure most will agree that breeding animals just because you want to isnt the best thing for them. What are your plans for the fry? Will they wind up at the pet store to be sold to someone who might not care for them as well as you? If you plan to keep them, do you have the space for the tanks and the time to care for them? No different than "backyard breeders" of dogs and cats, IMO. THese people have $$ in their eyes, not the well being of the animals. Think it through before changing the lives of the living beings in your care.

Breeding fish:

Step One: Learn as much as you can about the basic care requirements
of the fish in which you are interested. Proper housing, feeding, temp.
ph, substrate, planted or none, schooling or not etc.

Step Two: Obtain appropriate number of said fish, house in appropriate
conditions and observe. Learn to keep the fish under basic conditions.

Step Three: while doing step two, continue to study and read to learn
what breeding conditions and equipment are needed to successfully
breed your fish and rear their young. Will the female need to be
seperated? How are the eggs depostited. What conditions induce
spawning? What conditions are needed to ensure proper development
of the eggs. If a livebearer, similar questions, mostly focusing on what
point one isolates the female, or how to provide adequate shelter for
the fry. What will the fry require for food? How will they need to be
housed? What quantity should you expect and how will you house them?
Do you have means to re-home them?

Step Four: Build upon your accumulated knowledge and, when you know
enough to ask specific questions, ask them. There is no magic how-to.

Alternatively, buy fish, toss them in a tank, maintain them at reasonable levels of care with good nuitrition and wait to see if nature takes its course.

Stupid people who don't care about animals shouldn't own pets. You've proven you could give a crap less about taking care of your fish correctly, so why should anyone help you create more animals to abuse for your amusement?

Breeding Swordtails:

Buy the fattest female swordtail from your LFS. Wait for her to "pop" in your tank. Provide plenty of hiding spaces for the babies.

I wouldn't breed any other fish till you have had some experience with live bearers.

Lets re-phrase, shall we?
"I believe that some people shouldnt be allowed to have animals in their lives. (Notice I didnt say "own", because how can anyone "own" another living thing?) One should take the time to research the proper care of the animals in their homes, which it appears you havent. So please tell me, why should we help you bring more animals into the world on nothing more than a whim?"

GraphicDesignR, I really dont think your callousness helps at all. Take a breath, and read over your post before you hit Submit Reply next time, please. Its not fun to read your hate mail on an otherwise informative and fun forum... However, you and I are in agreement on this topic!!! I really dont have any sympathy for backyard breeders.
