i have a 5 gallon tank with several live plants and i was wondering if it would be a good idea to have 5 tiger barbs or is the tank just too small?i really love tiger barbs but my other tanks are full to capacity with other fish.

You could get some cherry barbs. I am a fan of them as they stay pretty small, alittle over an inch and don't need to be in a school. I would go with 1 male and 2 females. Make sure the tank has a good amount of plants and some caves or rocks as they will use them for hiding. They seem to be pretty hardy fish and are a nice red color.

Flat out wrong. Cherry barbs get as large or larger than tigers. The ones I've seen at my LFS are 2.5-3 inches.

I keep green barbs right now and they grow out to about the same size.

I'd recommend 30 gallons for a good sized school of barbs, minimum. You might get away with 4-5 in a 10 gallon with nothing else and religious water changes.

Yeah that would be fine, just rememeber they will breed so you need to have a plan for all of the babies. A betta would be good in a 5, you could plant it up. itwould be a cool little tank...
