Hi everyone, this is my last attempt at trying to help my snail. I ve searched for 2days now on the web and cant find anything. Here it is....
I have 2 golden mystery snails and took them out of my 29 gal. and put them in the 55gal. so I could use Melafix for my fish. The lfs said it would be fine. Well, my cat decided to make dinner of them. He ate my brown one completely, and one of my goldens is hurt.
Its still alive and in the shell, but its body close to the trap door looks torn, ripped, or bitten. The door seems looser now and it draws it in alot more now than before. The snail moves a bit when I touch it, but doesnt eat, crawl, or come out of shell at all now.
Is it going to make it, do I need to do something for it, or do I need to just finish it off now<which I hope isnt the answer?
Also I took them out of the tank and put them in a tall plastic food container with a lid and holes. Will they be ok there till I am done treating the 29 gal. tank? If so how often should I change the water in it?
Thanks all I hope someone can help me.
I know the antennas grow back, but didnt say anything about the rest of their body.

Change the water every 2-3 days. Unfortunately, this is simply a 'wait and see'' sort of suituation...I have seen as many snails recover from such things as I have seen eventually die.

Thanks at least theres a little bit of hope for it. I was so excited when I saw them and heard people here say they arent pests unless you have real plants. So I bought 3 to see if I d like them and fell in love. My brown one (rest in peace) would eat out of my hand. He was my fav. Now I have only his shell to hold

Melafix and Pimafix are considered snail safe by many. I'd really try to get them back to their filtered, heated, cycled environment. If your snail is reacting to your pestering, that is a good sign actually. Have you tried putting a really GOOD bit of food near the sick one? A shrimp pellet or algae wafer has a stronger scent and might draw him out for a nibble. He is likely scared out of his shell from the environment changes and being attacked. It may take a while for him to come out and be active again. Try not to mess with him much, other than acclimating him slowly back to his home tank. If he makes it, his trap door will grow back, though not as pretty as it was. Shell damage to the growing edge will also grow back and fill in, though he will have scars from it. I wish him luck!

Well I feed them both of them and it wont come out for either. I just changed the water in the 29 and added salt. I put in about 12 teaspoons cause I had to do a big water change and the fish are still a bit sick. looks like they have a hairy chin, lol funny looking. Anyways I put the filter back in to get the stuff floating around. For some reason I had slimmy, brown, alge in the filter box. It looked kinda feathery in the water. I let the filter run for 2 days and tomm. I m gonna do another water change to get the salt out and add the melafix again for another 5 days or so.
I know the salt will hurt the snails from what I've read here from others. I'm afraid He is dead now. Not responding to me and the water and snail has a faint smell to it. I had one die on me when I first bought them and it smelled horrible. I thought I was gonna get sick. This isnt as bad. Not even close.
The shell wasnt damaged though. Its the body about half an inch away from the door. Looks like he was holding on for dear life and was ripped. But I dont understand why the door is being held so far in though. It goes clear up to where the hole starts. Its really weird. More than likely it is dead or close to it and the muscles are getting weak. Too bad and such a shame. I feel like I murdered him.

Sadly my snail died about a week after it was attacked! Im going to start keeping a journal of fish info/advice so that I have all info on hand from now on. It is hard to find details on snail care. Thank you all for all the advice and info on this matter it was very helpful. Shannon

You stated that you checked out snail sites online--just in case you missed this one, I found it very helpful when I got my first apple snail. Very sorry about your loss. . . .~renee

Yes I even looked at that one for hrs. Thankyou at least I know now that more than loaches eat snails. Too bad for the snails that taught me that lesson.
