Hey guys. I am just getting back into SW tanks after a few years off. Reading the boards has educated me about the benefits of live sand and the laws banning importing into hawaii.

Can any of my fellow HI residents tell me where I could collect a few pounds of live sand to seed a new tank? I know that pollution is a concern on a lot of the Hawaii beaches.

I was really shocked by the low quality of the local fish stores in Honolulu and their disinterest in customer service or just plain igonorance of their business. For example, a LFS gent recommended a filter type to me without even asking what the tank would be stocked with! Would like to hear any other folks thoughts on the subject.

Thanks.

It, just for your info, there is an internet site that ships worms, pods, etc. that go into live sand. He may even ship sand from Hawaii, I think.

I can't think of the name right now. Might be worth checking into. IPSF, maybe?

IPSF does in fact ship from Hawaii - but, they don't ship TO Hawaii. Go figure.

ltmm, did you find anywhere to get live sand in Hawaii. I'm also in Hawaii and looking to start a saltwater aquarium. I'm on Oahu so if you know of any place that is good please let me know and I'll do the same.

I checked the current charts. Picked what looked like the cleanest area (no nearby crowded beaches, direct deep water flow) and scooped some sand from just below the low tide line. Grabbed a couple of good sized shore rocks too. Will see how it turns out.....West of the glider port on North Shore

Im gonna head back up to north shore this weekend and look for a couple damsels or other small fish. Someone suggested shark's cove for that. Any thoughts?

Let me know how it goes with the sand and rocks. Really sucks that they don't sell that stuff here. I'm not sure where is a good spot but I'll let you know if I hear of any place.
