Well today my fish, Poppa died. He was a bid 3 spot gourami. Yesterday morning he was completely fine, and then last night he was falling over and not having any control of his movements. I did a water test with my new test kit.

pH: 7.5
Ammonia: 0ppm
Nitrate:0ppm
Nitrite: 0ppm

After seeing him like this I did a 20% water change, and watched him for a while. Then I had to go to sleep. This morning he was dead.

None of my fish were sick at the time, all completely healthy. He was in a 30 gallon tank with 3 other 3 spots, and two snakeskin gouramis. Oh, and a small common pleco.

Maybe he died from old age? He was pretty old.

possible age caught up with him.... I've had some fish display similar symptoms, and all of them have died with in hours. still don't know what was wrong with them, but we narrowed it down to potential nitrate poisoning and have taken steps to reduce my nitrates and I haven't had any more problems.

what test kit did you get? I have an AP master freshwater and it took me like 12 tries before I could get the nitrate test to work right. apparently you need to follow the instructions to the letter (for example when it says "shake bottle #2, that's when you shake that bottle... dont' think you can shake it beforehand) for it to work right. I was getting 0ppm returns until I figured out what I was doing wrong, then I got returns of about 50ppm.

I did follow the directions and shook it very vigourously. And yes, that is the test kit I have. I shook it immediately before putting it in the test tube.

hmm wasn't sure if that might have given you a bad read since I got so many when I first got mine ;)

not sure what else it could be, but those sure sound like what I had going on in my tank for a few weeks (I lost 4 fish over a month and a half that same exact way) and haven't had problems since fixing my nitrate levels...

Sorry to hear this- God knows it sucks. It is more than likely from old age if you've had him for a while. In a situation like this it's normal to panic but I would monitor the other guys for the next few weeks as well as your water parameters very closely.

how old was the fish??

you shouldn't need to shake vigorously..after taking so many chemistry classes in college..I learned it's best to rock the bottle as in the diagram..it works better than shaking and mixes the chemical very well. lessens the chance of spills and reduces the amount of air trapped in the chemical.

soundslike to me it could very well have been old age..

Well I've had him for a year or so, and before that he belonged to my friend for who knows how long. And it also takes a year before they are large enough to sell in a pet store.

So, pretty darn old. He was also large, about 5 1/2 inches. So, he was probably old.
