i've had 2 male swordtails for about a month now and one of them just recently jumped out and died. my question is, will my 1 swordtail be ok by himself with my other community fish or should i get another to pair them.

20 gallon,

i have 2 male guppies, 5 neons, 1 harlequin, 1 silver tip tetra

ph level neutral.

I think he shuldbe ok by himself, but I'm concerned about the Harlequin (rasbora) and silver tip tetras school size. Think you can get four more harlequins and four more silver tip tetras, to keep them happy?

The tetras and harlequins (and any other rasbora) are schooling fish and, idealy should be kept in schools of 6 or more, but, your tank doesn't have enough room for that, so 5 should do. This would make your tank stocked by the way, so please don't add anything lse besides the harlequin rasboras and silver tip tetras.

yeah...the reason why there's only 1 is because i just recently moved and haven't restocked any dead fish for about 2 years.

that's another q i have. if my school (e.g. 5 silver tips) shortens to about 2 or 3, do i still need to add to the school. that would mean i would always have to maintain a school of silver tips

just curious

Schooling fish school to reduce the chance of any one fish being eaten, so when there's fewer schooling fish of the same species, they will be more scared of being eaten, and will probably tend to hide more. They also seem to lose a lot of thier colour ( a sign of stress if I'm not mistaken) when there reduced to a single fish in my expierience.

Really the fact remains that if you don't want your silvertips, or don't want to maintain the school anymore, you can always find them a new home. However, I would prefer if you kept the fish and maintained the schoools, in order to insure there properly kept and not introduced to a death trap with no water changes or a stupid person who decides to put a 6 inch oscar in the tank with them.

On a side note, they will survive with an insufiecient school size, but the quality of life will really diminish.

yeah i know,

i actually do have a lid with lighting it's just the back part where the filter is opens accross the top

Go to a craft store and get some "plastic canvas". It will be great for preventing the fish from jumping ship and is completely safe, I've even used it for dividers once.
