Hey all,

First post...let me reflect...

I was wondering what you all would suggest on a book that covers many of the aspect of keeping a freshwater aquarium. I'd be interested in having references to what chemicals we should be testing for outside of NO4, NO3, NH3, PH and the target values for each. I'd also like the book to have care for plants including common problem signs, a compatability chart for fish, and perhaps some photographs and descriptions of the natural habitat of individual species of fish. I have a feeling it's a long shot to get all those aspects into one book, but I thought I'd see what you guys have to suggest.

Thanks,

Kevin

Baensch Aquarium Atlas, volume 1 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/3882445181/sr=8-1/qid=1152460029/ref=sr_1_1/002-1394296-4391245?ie=UTF8) is pretty useful for pictures and basic info on many fish, as well as some information on water chemistry, etc.

For planted aspects, you may want to try
The Simple Guide To Planted Aquariums (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0793821177/qid=1152460121/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-1394296-4391245?v=glance&s=books), i have a copy of another book in the series (a simple guide to freshwater aquariums), and it was very useful covering all aspects of the aquarium. I imagine the planted one would do just as good, with some more emphasis on the plants however, so maybe try that.

Finally, for a good overview of some of the dynamics involving plants, as well as a moderate listing of plants along with pictures, The Encyclopedia of Aquarium Plants (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0764155210/qid=1152460321/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/002-1394296-4391245?v=glance&s=books) does a really wonderful job, and is a good read. (also good price).

I think if you picked up the fish atlas (or something similar such as dr.axelrod's mini-atlas), along with one of the books on plants, you would have more than enough information to maintain a beautiful planted tank :)
