I just got a 29 gallon kit. I currently have a 10 g with 2 gold barbs, 3 neon tetra, 2 platys a small pleco and a small bala shark. I'm trying to get rid of the shark because i know a 29 g is way too small for it. I didnt do much research on it before i bought it. So what would be good for a 29 gallon setup? i've been looking around at petstores and im pulling my hair trying to figure out what to get that would be suitable.. thanks.

Any Tetra species should be kept in a group no smaller than 6.
Barbs are semi-aggressive and should be kept with similarly tempered species that swim in the main water column- Tetra's are not one such species, though they are fine with any peaceful bottom-dwelling species.
Platy's will do fine, as will Mollies, and Guppies, as long as you have at least three of each species- don't worry about adding aquarium salt for them-they will be fine.
The Pleco should be fine on it's own.
Ditch the Bala, or at least put it in a much larger tank when it gets older with at least 5 other Bala's.

common?
Then your overstocked, as common plecos grow into 2 foot monsters(need a tank of atleast 180g for the majority of it's life - but will need bigger), and, the bala grows to a foot (barest minumum is 75g, but 125g would be prefered to keep them in atleast a small school of 3, as they are schooling fish), but will probably break the tank before that happens...
So, with this knowledge, it would be very unwise of you to add anymore fish until those two are out of there.

I would definitely get rid of the common pleco and the Bala shark. Once you get rid of them your possibilities are almost endless. You could get a group of tetras and mix them with other species etc. if you would still like to get a pleco I would recommend the bristlenose. This is a very interesting species and it does a good job eating brown algae.

yeah, man, my mom's common pleco is 19" right now, in her 75g with her oscar. she knows thats too small, but her girl friend gave it to her because it outgrew her 10g and no LFS in the city would take it.
