My female black belt laid eggs today. However, she has had them with a Vieja Sinspilia. They are taking turns faning them.
They had dug a huge pit in the center of the tank underneath some rock caves I had built. All of the way down to the bottom of the tank (in about four inches of gravel). It is also about twelve to fourteen inches long. They laid the eggs, well the Blackbelt did, on a flat rock right outside of the caves. They had chased my JD into a corner a couple of days ago, but he is eating fine and none of his fins are damaged and he has taken back over about fifteen gallons (its a ninety gallon tank). So my question is now what? Will my catfish eat all of the eggs when I turn the lights out or will the fish stay up all night protecting them? Will the eggs even hatch or will they be infertile? If they do hatch will the fish become more aggressive with free swimming fry? (The tank has reached a somewhat happy medium right now, at least no one is chasing and there is only some minor gill flaring). If there are fry what do I do with them? Either way will this happen again in a couple of weeks or is this a fluke? Help please!!! The tank is at 79 degrees with a PH of 6.8. I do not know the hardness of it but I use all RO water with seachem central american cichlid buffer. I also add Electo-Ryte with trace elements.
