I went to the beach yesterday and Hubby found a small piece of coral...he wanted to put it in one of my FW tanks, of course I stopped that train of thought quickly. However, it got me thinking about starting a very small SW tank (is this a nanotank??)....
1) the coral was put in my bag without me knowing it; is this piece of coral still alive? did i kill it? oops...
2)if i did start a nano tank, what all could go in it? 2 or 5 gallons is what Im thinking. too small?
Thanks!

if ur husband found the piece of coral washed up on the beach theres a 99.99999% chance taht it was already dead. if you're new to sw then i would definetly not recommend attempting a nano. even some of the best experts have rough times maintaining a nano. the bigger the tank is the more stable it will be and the easier it will be to take care of.
Not that I'm suggesting it (I don't think it's the best course of action) but my mom has kept alive a 5 gallon saltwater for about a year now, or more, and she knows practically nothing about aquaria of any sort. At first she made the mistake of putting a bunch of fish in there (eek!), but she's maintained it with a tomato clown and a... the name slips my mind. little blue fish with the yellow tail.... for around a year. I'm sure they are both majorly stunted since they seem to have grown little or non at all, but they are alive, somehow.

the coral was found in the water, but a fairly shallow area. It would have eventually washed up, Im sure...
Yeah, I have no saltwater experience, but I am thinking about considering getting into it! I mostly just wanted to keep the coral alive, if it may still have been. (If it were alive in the water, would it be dead now? How long does coral survive exposed like that?) I know abuot the larger tank = diluted problem thing, so thats one obstacle....I suppose I'll just have to keep looking for more free tanks and places to put them. Thanks for the input though!

yeah if it were alive it would definetly be dead by now. chances are if it was alive when u found it, it was dead when u first started this thread.
