I got a 5 gallon tank not long ago. What goes good with guppies? I also have a cory catfish in there too. Please help. :cool2:

cory's are group fish and don't really prefer to be alone, it would be better if you had atleast 3. i don't think 3 cory's would fit in that 5g depending on the type. i'm sure someone more knowledgeable on this topic will fill ya in on which ones to get.

Yes, 3 cories of some species will not fit in a 5g while certain species will. Do you by any chance know what species of cory it is?

As far as adding more fish to the tank, in that size, I wouldn't add anymore species to the tank. You may be able to increase the numbers of the species you have now, but I personally don't think a 5g is big enough to comfortably house more than 2 species of fish.

Oh ya, how many guppies are in the tank now? You may be overstocked already.

First off I wouldn't ad anything else. The guppy and the cory are cutting it close as is. Almost any type of cory should be in a group of at least 5. Both types need more swimming room and will not be happy in that small of a tank.

A few different types of fish that might go good are as follows
  • Cherry Barbs (1 male, 1 Female)
  • Betta
  • Small Shrimp

I'm not saying to get all of them but say 2 Cherry Barbs and a small snail or shrimp would work good. If you do get the cherries make sure you have some plants and hiding spots as the cherries will use them. They are nce smaller, colorful fish that don't need to be in a group. As for the snail or shrimp I couldn't say the best type. Someone else may help better on this.

Just my 2 cents.

when i see them in groups cherry barbs are usually schooling. in my opinion nothing except a betta should be in anything smaller than a 10 gallon, its just not fair to cut their world down to anything less than that.

I didn't know that a cory is a group of fish. I have a like catfish. I haev a betta in a tank by himself. I heard that they fight with the guppies. I had one that chased the guppy. Is it ok to put the betta in with the guppies?

While a few people say they've kept guppies and bettas together successfully, bettas tend to be aggressive around other fish, in my opinion. It's especially true if the other fish have nice, big, flowing fins and are colorful: like guppies. It's just easier for the betta to confuse it for a rival.

In my experience, I had a betta that I tried to put in a community tank and he got aggressive toward anything that moved, no matter how different it looked and acted compared to himself. I am never going to try to put bettas in with other fish anymore myself.

So you can risk it if you want, but I'd bet 98% it won't work.
