For something new on the blog, I am counting down the top ten fish I would like to keep at some point in my life. I will update hopefully twice a week, so this will keep me busy until sometime in late August. If anyone is interested, I would like to post other people's top ten of favorite fish they do keep or would like to keep in between my countdown posts. PM me with the lists and include any reasons why if you want. My number 10 is currently up: Percula Clownfish.

Nerdyguy, about clownfish. I don't know if this is true for percula's (I think it may be clowns in general), but they (as well as some other fishes) exhibit sequential hermaphroditism. In this case, they are born males and become females at a certain age, size, or in certain social situations. So in Finding Nemo, when Nemo's mom died, his dad would have become his mom. You probably knew that, tho, since you seem pretty well connected. Also, symbiosis with anemones appears to have a genetic component whereby offspring are able to survive in the same anemone as their parents' because of similar "signature" on the skin. Clowns can not just swim into any anemone and get along with it. In fact, they have to develop an immunity of sorts to a particular individual, I think it was. There's a getting-to-know-you period, which can be omitted if the young continue to live in the same anemone as their folks. I guess it's like inheriting a lease :)

Thanks for the info plah. I did my research mainly on keeping the clown in an aquarium, so I actually did not run across any of that stuff. I may add it though just because it is really interesting. I readily admit that I am far from an expert on marine fish. I don't think I am going to have any more on the list for that reason. It is definitely a whole different universe of fishkeeping. Thanks again.

Thanks for the fish idea daniel. I can do profiles on idividual fish as opposed to whole lists if people want to suggest them.
