Hi all, just a quick question. Is it normal for fish excrement to be dark green? I have 5 platies and 5 guppies in a 50 litre approx. tank, when i got them their droppings were red... I'm thinking they might have been eating my plants/algae.

Thanks.

fish poo runs the gambit like human poo, it depends on their diet and what they are eating.

Platys and guppys do eat algae and might nibble a bit at your plants, but they won't really do any harm.

What they eat will determine what color their feces are. Green is healthy for omnivores (platys, guppys, mollys) and herbivores.

IMO most people do not feed enough green stuff to their omnivorous fish. Too much protein isn't a good thing. Gotta have salad, too.

My tinfoil barbs have green poop a day after feasting on a bundle of cabomba stems. Nothing wrong with green poop and nothig wrong with them eating some algae. In fact, as already stated, it is healthier for them to have a varied diet. Enjoy your fish :joe:
