Removing "Dust"

I am cycling a 40 gallon bin for an RES with a homemade filter. I used lava rock for part of the filter media, and while I did wash it very well before I used it, I now have a film of black dust on the surface of the water from it. What is the best way to remove it?

you could use your siphon over just the surface to suck it out, or if you have a very fine net you could scoop it out.

you can just use a papertowel to skim the top or a coffee filter.... =)

water changes..... and/or it will more than likely settle with time. If the filter doesn't produce a lot of water movement, perhaps you should look into getting power heads...
