my lfs has some a 2.5 -3" and they are kinda ugly grey but with interesting eyes. she said the are peaceful and get much better looking as adults. does anybody have them? are they ditherish like blood parrots?

I've never owned one but I've read up on them. I've also seen them on display at the Baltimore aquarium, in a huge South American habitat.

They are a peaceful, schooling cichlid. Sort of like a Severum, but even more mundane. They look impressive when full size. Uaru's are pretty hard to find in LFS's. They are considered a little difficult to keep because they prefer soft, acidic water (similar to Discus, but not to that extreme). Everything I've read says that if you do find them, they are probably wild caught fish.

At the exhibit, I saw them with Severums, Eartheaters, Acaras, Pacus, Silver Dollars, Plecos, even water turtles and sting rays. Pretty impressive.

If you have a large tank (90g and better), and your tap water is below PH 7.0 (or you use R/O water), I would say go for it. Pick up 4 or so and see what happens.
