I got the idea to make half my tank darker and half lighter so my fish could choose what they want. I placed blue painters tape in layers on the glass under the light. Part of my tank glows with a midnight blue color... Will this hurt my fish? Thanks for youe help.

definetly wont hurt ur fish at all although i dont see how that could be appealing to ur eyes, but hey, to each his own.

how large is your tank? for bigger tanks (29 gal +) you can get light fixtures that will accomodate 2 bulbs. it's pretty common for cichlid and reef keepers to put in one white bulb and one blue (actinic) bulb. they even sell bulbs that are 50/50 white and blue. for cichlids, i think even all actinic might be fine, too, as they prefer dimmer light in general.
do you have any live plants in there?
