i was wondering if my danoi is sick he is not ewating has his head at the top and his body like bent down 2/3 of the way down. pleese help. .......... nate

Hi Nate
sorry to hear your fish is sick but before anyone can help we need more information. Can you tell us what size tank he is in? How long have you had him? The tanks readings (ammonia, nitrates, nitrates levels, ph, temp etc) how long has the tank been set up? Is it cycled? do you add dechlorinators to your water? How often do you do water changes? Anything that will help us to pinpoint what the problem might be :)

he is in a 29 with a couple of freinds about 3 weeks he or has been in there and is in the prosses of being cycled and i dont have a test kit yet but will get one soon. 78-80 degrees and he is not really eating. he has 3 buddies with him also that are doing great and a playing with each other and eating well. and i do a water change like once a week i have just been told not to do that for a month to fully set up the tank. so if you need and more ask if i didnt tell you already. nate

This may not help your danio any but i would say you need to get those water test kits. Danios are very tough fish recommended for using in cycles but you may have some dangerous ammonia or nitrite/nitrate spikes going on and we dont know. I would certainly do a 40-50% water change to see if that helps. When doing a fish cycle you certainly need to be on top of your water changes to prevent spikes from occuring or to quickly level them out when they do to prevent harming your fish. Also with your fishes head at the top maybe aeration is an issue?
I hope someone more experienced than I can help you out here.

this one fella at a petstore today siad not to do a water test becasue the cycle would get mest up and would start over. he is about 50 - 55 years old and has many tank and is very expierienced but when i got home i found the fish sick. so i will have to ask him about in the near future but i will try to get the water tests in the near future. but is the fish really sick its not like he isnt moving but he isnt swing around hes just leting the current take and the occasional move but no a major one like 1/8 of and inch or so. is my long explation is bad im sorry im 14 and new to this ............ thanks

I dont see how testing the water will affec tthe cycling, all you will do is take a teeny bit of water out... And you need to moniter the levels of Ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, etc etc in order to find out if/when your tank has cycled. Go ahead and get a test kit. (You can print out the online page of the petsmart -or is it petco??- and take that in and save some $$)

Your danio may have a swim bladder problem. Do some big water changes, thats really all you can do for swim bladder probs, if this is what it is. This wont hurt your cycle, and you will need to do them at some point, when your levels indicate. (Most freshwater tanks require weekly water changes to be healthy)

thanks ill try

now i dont even see him. i look in the take and hes no were to be seen and i looked around the tank
what the heck is going on :help:

could be he died and other fish took advantage of the free meal. if thats not the case, look around by the floor where your tank is......some fish have a nasty tendancy to jump for freedom

Keep an eye on the other danios, cause he may have had a parasite of some sort or fish TB. Next time you could try a salt bath for him. I had a similar problem with my danio and a salt bath cured it.
