I plan on getting a 55 gallon tank somewhat soon. I know I want a single GT and one more fish as a companion. What single fish would get along with a GT? What have other people kept with a GT? I was looking at the other thread "Most beautiful cichlids" and the Electric Blue Dempsey is gorgeous! Is that a fish I can keep with a GT?

You could do a jd or possibly a serevum or a texas all would probabally work as lon as there is lots of hiding places. I have a green terror jack dempsey a jag and a serevum all in the same tank the green terror is the mellowist of them all the gt in my experience grows a little slower then the fish I am keeping. you have lots of options dont limit yourself.

I would agree with this. If you have a green terror with a texas or a jack you may want the terror to be slightly larger (I have found them to be SLIGHTLY more passive them some of these other fish).

Well I wanted to get them young. Should I get the GT first and wait a couple months before addind a JD? Are those the only fish that would go with a GT?

I've researched them, too, and discovered they're hybrids and tend to be on the more difficult end of keeping, kind of like Discus. Water quality is critical to keeping them healthy and happy, and making sure tank companions are not stressful for them. Don't want you spending all that money just to have it die. . . . . they really are beautiful.

If you're talking about blue dempseys, they are NOT hybrids (which is the offspring of two different fish). They are true jack dempseys, but carry a recessive gene for that striking blue color (which may relate to other differences as well). They do seem to be more fragile, ime, especially when they are small. Once they get past 3", they seem to be ok. They also seem to be less aggressive than "normal" jds. And they are pricey.

Jeff Rapps has them quite often for about $25@ when small. There is also a guy (Ormed) who is just beginning to supply them. I believe he's shipping groups of 5 or 6 for $100, which is a great deal if you can find someone to take the excess (of course I'd suggest you keep them until you KNOW you've got a survivor). I bought three from Jeff several months ago, and the remaining two (you have to expect some attrition with these fish) are doing just fine. One's about 4" and the other about 5", so I don't think I have to worry about them at this point.

it's funny I was going to reply an Electric blue dempsey. I met Jeff Rapps yesterday. Illinois had the ACA yearly meeting and I picked up 7 EB Dempseys from tangledupincichlids. 15 bucks a fish. WOW! I'm working on breeding the EB dempseys and Putting the father from the 1st batch and the standard with my GT. Then I'm going to breed one of these babies with one of the new fish.
So yes,
I am going to try an EB Dempsey in my GT tank in one year.

What kind of tank do you have? Since you probably have the fish that I want to stock the tank with, could you post some pics? Tell me how GT's and EB Dempsys are together. You probably have my dream tank.

Right now I have my GT in a 95 gal with a TX cichlid.
For now I have the 7 baby EB dempseys in a 40.
I have a standard Dempsay and an EB Dempsey in a 46 bow.
They have already spawned once but they were to yung and the eggs didn't hatch all the way.
I need to get 2 more 55 gal tanks to move my spawning pair into one of them. The EB's I picked up I am planing on selling 5 of them and keeping 2. That was an envestment thing. The 2 I keep will be for spawning reasons. they will go in the other 55. I am hoping to switch bloodlines on the EBs when it's time for my final spawning prosses.

My Avator is my GT and I think I have a movie on this site of him swimming around in my 95 gal

Gorgeous GT! I am jealous. He still has more growing to do, right? If you ever get time to put up pics of your EB Dempsies, it would be appreciated. Awesome GT!

Tahnks for the GT coments. Yes he should have some growing to do. He is only 8 or 9 inches now.

I will have to make a movie of the EBs great idea.
