I am setting up a 40 gallon high this weekend. It will be a planted tank. I know that my Angel will go in there since she is too aggressive to be in my 120 (keeps going after the small fish). I was thinking of getting a pair of kribensis and maybe a small species of pleco when i get some aldae growth, but don't know what else to get?

Any suggestions?

Do you think I could get 5-6 Pearl Gouramis (a mix of male and female)?

Any schooling fish I could put in there?

Looking for ideas.

PS, I will make sure the tank is cycled and stable before I start adding fish.

What about some more angels?

Yeah, angels are very pretty fish, especially the kois. A group of 3 or 4 those would look very nice.....OR, If you want a group of gouramis, I think it's better to get a variety of species rather than all the same. They can get pretty aggressive amongst thier own kind...if you mix up the species that won't be as much of a problem.

You could have one pair of german blue rams as well. I would just do one pair of those if you choose them.

Whatever you decide, I think you should get a nice group of the smaller size cories. The smaller ones so that they don't add as much to the bioload. Pandas or peppers and some others stay a bit on the smaller size. The emeralds get huge (for a cory)..don't get those. Cories do a great job of vacuming the gravel, in fact, I think they win the prize for THAT job ! They'll be sure to eat up anything the other fish miss on the way down.

I'd skip on the plecos completely. All they do is eat and poop. They make a mess and don't eat all that much algae after awhile. If you want algae eaters get a siamese algae eater (SAE.....NOT a chinese algae eater) or some ottocinclus. They're smaller and will allow more room for whatever "show fish" you choose to put in there.

So cories for gravel cleaning and garbage eaters......ottos or SAEs for the algae, and then whatever you choose for your "show" fish. A group of some schoolers would be nice as well, but if you add angels they'll have to be on the larger size or the angels will just eat them. I have some pristella tetra in my tank with 2 angels and they do well...very pretty fish too...IMO.

Have fun ! I LOVE setting up new tanks and chooseing the occupants ! Definitely post a pic after you get it all setup ! ;)

You could put some swordtails in there or a school of cories.

No more Angels. When I got the one I have I had 4, she killed them all. Not trying that again. She is very content to be the only one. I have 2 Dwraf Neon Gouramis in my 120 along with 9 (not sure of the sexes. I thought I had 3 males and 5 females, but they may be all males-with the subdominant looking like females) honey dwarfs. I may move the 2 Neons in with the Angel and then I can put Pearls in the 120. I am Gourami crazy, lol

I worry about the swordtails too b/c the Angel will go after all of the babies. Altho that may be a good thing. population control. I might get some cories. I just don't want them getting beat up by the Kribs when they breed.

I like the idea of the rams. They could make it in an aggressive tank with the Angel and Kribs?

Any other suggestions?

You might try pristella tetras. I have some in my 55g see sig they do very well, and school nicely if you have at least 6 of them.
