Yeah, angels are very pretty fish, especially the kois. A group of 3 or 4 those would look very nice.....OR, If you want a group of gouramis, I think it's better to get a variety of species rather than all the same. They can get pretty aggressive amongst thier own kind...if you mix up the species that won't be as much of a problem.
You could have one pair of german blue rams as well. I would just do one pair of those if you choose them.
Whatever you decide, I think you should get a nice group of the smaller size cories. The smaller ones so that they don't add as much to the bioload. Pandas or peppers and some others stay a bit on the smaller size. The emeralds get huge (for a cory)..don't get those. Cories do a great job of vacuming the gravel, in fact, I think they win the prize for THAT job ! They'll be sure to eat up anything the other fish miss on the way down.
I'd skip on the plecos completely. All they do is eat and poop. They make a mess and don't eat all that much algae after awhile. If you want algae eaters get a siamese algae eater (SAE.....NOT a chinese algae eater) or some ottocinclus. They're smaller and will allow more room for whatever "show fish" you choose to put in there.
So cories for gravel cleaning and garbage eaters......ottos or SAEs for the algae, and then whatever you choose for your "show" fish. A group of some schoolers would be nice as well, but if you add angels they'll have to be on the larger size or the angels will just eat them. I have some pristella tetra in my tank with 2 angels and they do well...very pretty fish too...IMO.
Have fun ! I LOVE setting up new tanks and chooseing the occupants ! Definitely post a pic after you get it all setup !
