Hey eeryone!

I have decided to set up a FOWLR tank in couple of months with a 20 gallon high ( a little unstable for a newbie) . Right now I am in the research stage, and am a little confused about filters. I have some Aqua Clear filters (HOB) laying around and have heard you can use these on SW tanks. One filters 100 gph and the other filters 200 gph. So if I were to use these I would have a total of 300 gph on a 20 gallon.

So my questions are

Can you even use these filters on a SW tank?

Is 300 gph too much? to little?

I have also heard taht people say to use carbon in one filter and LR peices in the other. Correct?

And that is all for now....

Thank you!

I've heard of 5 changes per hour as a benchmark.

So the 100 on its own should do fine. AFter all, 20 gal isn't THAT big.

most people dont use any filters really. the only filtration you need is live rock, a lot of circulation and a good protein skimmer. you're much better off getting a few powerheads for circulation rather than hob filters. you want to turn your water over at least 10 times per hour. in my 75 gallon reef im currently turning my water over almost 30 times per hour.
