Hello - I have two bala sharks in a 55g. I was thinking about getting either one or two more. They are 2 1/2 to 3" right now. I know they get big but I am only keeping them for 10 months b/c of a 2,000 mile move.

My question is - I have had these two for about 3 months. Will they be receptive to one or two more in their school? Do I need to make sure they are the same or similar size? What does one recommend - 3 or 4 total for a tank? I know they do better in schools.

Thanks

William

First off I would not get anymore. The biggest reason being is you are going to need to get rid of them within a years time. They will not be easy to give away as they get rather large and most people will not have a tank that is good size for them.

Second, yes they do like to be in a school. 4-5 would be your best bet but only in the right size tank. You would most likely want to get some around the same size. They are usally very peaceful and not very aggresive with other balas.

I single Bala Shark needs a 75g tank just to themself, when full grown, to be happy. They will end up killing themselves if they are kept in a tank that is to small for them. They could even end up breaking the tank as they bash there head into it. I would say to just stay at what you have or you could be asking for problems.
