its a species of fully aquatic Salamander. But they will become full terrestrial if the water conditions are not right. So they need Clean water.

yeah they do and if they do grow out of that stage, they look like an adult as well. They are cool creatures.

It is generally accepted that neoteny is a "backward" step in evolution, because the Axolotl is descended from what were once terrestrial salamanders, like the closely related species, the Tiger Salamander, Ambystoma tigrinum and Ambystoma mavortium spp. (in fact, one likely theory suggests that the Axolotl is in fact a Tiger salamander off-shoot, as it can interbreed with that species with some success). Through some quirk of nature, a neotenous form developed and, probably due to environmental conditions, prospered. Neoteny is sometimes found in other amphibians, but tends to be caused by low levels of iodine (an essential element for animals to make thyroxine hormones, necessary for growth and development), or random genetic mutation. Research has also shown that very low temperatures can also suppress the production of these hormones, also inducing neoteny.

They are readily available here in central Illinois. I've had them before. They are loads of fun. If you live down south you may be able to find them at bait shops.

Those would not be Axolotls but more or less Tiger Salamder larvae.

You can buy them at bait shops. I live in AZ and I know people that use them for bait for largemouth bass. I have also used them they look ident. to your pic.

Mac, I seriously doubt that those are Axotles as that would be an introduction of an Exotic if they got free from the hook or dumped in a lake. What you have being sold there are Tiger Salamanders or another local Salamander.
