Hello,
I've been reading here for a few days, but this is my first post!

Im looking for WEIRD companions for my tetras.
Id like to add medium sized fish or bottom feeders.
I like the idea of having a tank with only 2 species. and as many of each as will be happy.

my tank:

-22 gallon planted tank 1'x1'x3' (HxWxL)
-15 glowlight tetras
-Hot Magnum hang-on-back filter
-250 MH with the Philips gro bulb (going to upgrade to proper bulb as soon as I can)

Dwarf Gourami, Rams, would be fine with neons.

Upside down catfish are pretty weird. But you probably won't see them much. Panchax could work. They're quite odd. Maybe hatchetfish.

thanks momar, I hadn't heard of Panchax or Hatchetfish.
don't want them to jump onto my MH as I have a canopy but no glass top.
more suggestions?

One zigzag eel would be good. But mesh, find at fabric store or walmart, over the filter opening to keep them from getting there. if you plan on upgrading african butterfly fish are a nice addition. Kuhlii Loach would work without upgrading or 1 dragon fish/violet goby(only if you are planning to upgrade).

P.S. I have personal experience with any of these fish if you ned help.

i agree with DarkEntity, rams would go good with them and require the same water needs
