Hello - this is my first post here. I am in the process of setting up a 20 gallon high freshwater tank. Right now there is nothing in there but gravel and water. I had big plans to set up a 150 gallon reef tank and I spent over a year doing research on everything reef. That project has been put on hold because I will probably be moving in 2 years and the thought of taking it down...,..

I am trying to satisfy my itch with this small freshwater tank. I know what I need to do to set it up, cycling etc but to tell you the truth I am researched out!! I am looking for help on stocking suggestions. Everything from snails to fish and how many of each. I figure I'd take a shortcut and ask the experts and then research based on that to find what I want. Also looking for plant suggestions....

Thanks for your help!

Here are some links for stocking ideas:
1. http://thinkfish.co.uk/ The community creator is a pretty cool little tool, a little confusing to figure out sometimes, but gives you a good idea of which fish go with which.. Do you want a community tank?

2. http://www.fishdeals.com/aquarium_compatibility/community_tanks/ A few suggested stocking ideas

3. http://www.elmersaquarium.com/ This site is a little messy however there are pages upon pages of user tank "table of contents" might be helpful in figuring out a good mix that others have found to "work".

4. http://www.timstropicals.com/Compatibility/NameResults.asp Great site for checking fish compatibility.

As always never just go with one site, find the fish you would like to keep and always do additional research!! I don't do real plants, as I'm just terrible at plant keeping of any sort! So hopefully someone can jump in on that front.

Good luck, let us know how it goes and what you decide upon.

I have a 20 Gallon and there is lots of different options you can do. Do you have any kind of fish in mind that your considering? How are you going to cycle your tank? With fish or fishless?

Thank you for those links! All I know is that I do want a pair of Rams and then after that I have no idea. I plan on picking up some bio-spira and going that route with the cycle.

Rams are fun fish to keep and you have plenty of options for tank mates, I suggest a school of Cory Catfish. Maybe 6 Panda Corys.

One more question - in my reefing research I learned the importance of light - the more the better. I have learned that is not necessarily the case with a planted fresh water tank. I have a 1x65 PC florescent light over the 20G high. Am I asking for trouble with algae?
