I'm having trouble with my tank and I'm running out of ideas.

My water is extremely cloudy and has been for the last 4 days or so. Ammonia levels are sky high and Nitrites are present too. I have administered ammonia treatment and treatment for nitrites but to no avil. I've done a partial water change. I also tried Water Clear dissolving tablets. The fish are all staying at the surface of the water. I think they are struggling to breathe. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanx

Do a large water change, like 50% at least to get the ammonia down. Do you have a bubbler? That may help with oxegynation. But to keep those levels under control with LOTS of water changes. Dont worry too much over cloudyness, its probably the bacterial bloom and will dissapear eventually with your regular maintenance wc's.

thanks for the quick replies. keep the suggestions coming. I have turned down the thermostat seeing that the water is 80 F. I have a topfin 30 cartridge filter with activated carbon. i have a bubler but i need a airstone and i intend to buy one this afternoon

when was the last time you changed the cartridge?
also- without an undergravel filter, benificial bacteria only develops on the top layer of gravel, and the water under that loses oxygen quickly. you may want to invest in an undergravel filter to help keep benificial becteria levels in check

also, decor with airstones helps with airation. i saw a few decorations at petsmart that were hooked up to an airstone, and a few had the underwater "rivers" of bubbles that led to a wheel that the bubbles turn. kindof a "bio-wheel" like in the marineland systems.
