Removing a deep sand bed

Does anyone have any experience removing a deep sand bed? I want to go to a bare-bottom and need to get rid of 4" of live sand in my 55 gal. tank. Should I remove it a bit at a time, or all at once, or something in between? My concern is the toxic gases, etc., that may exist deep in the bed. I have about 50 lbs of live rock and an efficient Aqua C Remora skimmer. No other filtration.

Any ideas on the best way to go?

Thanks.

I would be tempted to do it all at once. Move fish & rock & water to some tubs.......get out the sand and then put everything back. You will need a lot more flow with a bare bottom to keep every thing suspended so your skimmer can remove it......

I agree with Lorna. Do it all at once. Should not be a real big problem since your live rock will help with the filtering. If you siphon out the water and put it in tubs along with your rock and fish, etc., then there should be no problem with toxic gases from the sand removal.
