I have a Black Tetra that I think might be pregnant. In the past few weeks it has been significantly more aggressive than it used to be and it has been eating much more than usual. Last night I was taking a closer look while performing a water change and I noticed that it has a huge bulge in its belly. I am pretty sure its not sick because it has good color and all other indicators are good. I am not really sure what is going on. If I knew for certain that it was a female I might have a better idea, but I haven't been able to find any good ways to sex tetras.

Cool, thanks.

Should I be concerned about this? The bulge is very uniform and is located under the ribs. I would post pics, but I am not at home to take pics right now.

Can you post a picture? Is the bulge slightly lighter then the rest of the fish? I have several tetras with this bulge and it is lighter then the rest of the fish. I really think it is because they eat more then the rest of the fish. I wouldn't really worry about it so long as your fish are acting normally and have good colors.

egg layers can produce eggs which they don't shed, leading to a swollen belly. i had a female white cloud minnow who was constantly "obese" looking. the conditions weren't right for her to spawn (she didn't like her male companion) so the eggs were never laid. it's OK, though, because they can and will resorb the eggs eventually.

yes, as Bunny said, as long as s/he's eating well, looks healthy, and isn't causing too much trouble in your tank, you'll be fine.

Thanks for all the help. I will post a pic once I get home this evening.
