I'm gonna slowly turn my 55g Asain tank around to a South American one (as the asain one turned out too orange/red) and have aquired 3 Nannacara's (1M, 2F) which are cave spawners.

Long term I'll be adding some cories too (Sterbai) so I'm not wanting substrate spawners, so the Bolivian Ram is out. However, I've read from various sites and some say that Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid's are cave spawners, other's say they're substrate spawners.

What's the general consensus?

Cave spawners. In general, Apistogramma sp. tend to be cave spawners. (Cichlid Atlas vol 1, Romer 2000)
