I have a gold-nugget pleco that I was just given. I am told I have to give him zuchini. Is that true? How do you feed them zuchini, doesn't it float? What else do they need to be healthy?

zucchini is great, as long as it's not the ONLY thing you're feeding it. Plecos also enjoy omnivorous bottom feeder wafers (e.g. will take algae wafers as well as those with only meat in them). A big misconception is that plecostomuses can survive on only the algae in your tank. The truth is, they have diverse food needs and will eat nearly anything that sinks to them. The best way to get food to them is to use sinking pellets or wafers designed for bottom feeders.

For any fish, variety is the key to getting all nutrients. Just like with people, if you eat only one thing all your life, you get sick, and so will they.

to keep the zucchini down, you can use a Veggie Clip that sticks onto the side of your tank, or just lodge it under the corner of an ornament or rock, as long as enough sticks out so that the plec can get to it. Some people also blanch the veggies first (boil it for a few seconds, or microwave it briefly) to soften it up. Try it either way with a variety of veggies and see which your plec prefers! that's the fun part, playing chef for your fishy!
