Help! I've been looking online for what seems like ages (two long nights in a row) I'm looking for an addition to my tank without alter the conditions of my water. Here the water is pretty hard- around 300 whatever the unit is and my pH is pretty stable at 7.8. Which fish enjoy these conditions???? Anyone out there have similar water conditions. I would really appreciate any insight on this matter. Thanks and goodnight.

I have water that is just as hard and high pH and all my fish do fine. Usally it is simply certain fish want the softer water for breeding. I have the following types of fish...

Gold Barbs
Cherry Barbs
Painted Glassfish
Pepper Cories
Pristella Tetras
Bleeding Hearts
Guppy
Harlequin Rasboras
Dwarf Gourmais

I also did have a few other fish that did fine in this type of water. I had to give them away for various reasons though. They are listed below..

Kissing Fish
Bala Sharks
Blue Gourmais

All these fish do fine, as do most other fish, if the fish are acclumated to the tank slow enough. Fish are great at adapting to new tanks.

What type of fish are you wanting to add? The only real thing you have to worry about is will the new fish get along with the old ones. Other than that there really shouldn't be an issue with gettting whatever it is you want.

Well, I wanted to add some swordtails to help with consuming the fry population, then after they got settled in I wanted to get a bristlenose catfish. After that, if all was well I wanted to throw in a blue gourami. Everytime I try to "research" the water qualities online and in books, most of them list a softer water level for these species.
The last time I tried to add some swordtails all of them died before they made it to their home tank. So I'm starting over fresh, even with a better filter for the 10 gallon "introductory" tank.
I just don't want to kill anyone else- :)

Them fish should be good to add. They all are pretty hardy fish and should acclumate pretty easily. One thing though, I would not recomend the Blue Gourmai. The reason being is they can get on the aggressive side of things. Sometimes you can get lucky though. Usally it will take at least a month or so to see it as they are getting used to the tank. Maybe go with a couple Dwarf Gourmais as they tend to be very calm fish that get along with almost all other fish.

On a side note the Gourmais I beleive will also help with the fry as they will eat them also. Good luck and I hope you the best this time.

Thanks! That's good to know!
