I was talking to one of the guys who works at a LFS the other day and he was saying that his friend has a green terror in a tank with tiger barbs and tinfoil barbs. I can believe the tinfoils but do you think the tigers would be picked on? I am thinking about restarting a south american tank at some point but currently have a (mainly) barb tank. I would be pretty hesitant to try something like this, even with a juvenile green terror. Any thoughts? Please keep the flaming to a minimum, if possible - I am just asking for thoughts, not validation of this person's experiment. :D

I don't know about Tiger Barbs, but I have a single Tinfoil Barb that gets along fairly well with my other fish.

Max size on green barbs is listed at like 3 inches most places I've seen, but I've had experience with much bigger ones (don't know if the degree of hybridization plays a factor). I saw one returned to LFS that was easily 4.5-5 inches long, about as long as the width of my hand. He was in with assorted aggressives and was just fine.

If there were feeder fish in the tank I would worry less when trying it out. If you give aggressive/semi-aggeessive fish an easy target/meal, they typically will be easier on tankmates. That and barbs can just be nasty, even small ones hold their own pretty well (unless swallowed whole).

Yeah, the barbs can be nasty little buggers, especially to other fish of different species in the same area.

It might actually be refreshing to find a post about tiger barbs being picked on :)

Aw, but they are so cute! Nobody picks on my l'il nippers! (except me with the gravel siphon - it's for their own good)

I love mine too, I just added 5 more to my 35G though because they were picking on one and I needed a diversion to give that one a break - ornery little things :)

Anyone else have thoughts or experience with this sort of setup?
