there is no record of the species name "longirostrus" on either FishBase or ITIS (the Integrated Taxonomic Information System), e.g. there are NO species of any animal with longirostrus as the second part of the scientific name. Both those sites are maintained by taxonomists, and also include old scientific names that are no longer in use (synonymies). So it looks like longirostrus was never used at all.

Sorry to break it to ya, akapaul. Do you remember where you found that latin name to begin with?

It's "Synodontis longirostris" with an i. You're right, it has no common name. I guess the closest name would be "long-nosed sqeaker", which is just the English translation of the latin name. It is a squeaker or upside-down cat which reaches about 2 foot maximum length and originates from the African Congo basin (as most Synodontis do).

you're always welcome, akapaul.

I should have just done a Yahoo! search before I went to the fishy searches. Serves me right for trying to be a scientist, huh? :)

anyway, that info I just gleaned from a quick internet search. You're always welcome to do more on your own and see what you find.

Thanks again for being a responsible fish owner
