I had originally posted this in GFW, but it got buried (big surprise). Plus it's probably more appropriate to this section.

I finally found the name of the bacteria in BioSpira. they are Nitrosomonas, Nitrosospira and Nitrospira. the guy who developed the formula for Marineland actually has papers published in the last 10 years stating his discovery, and disclaiming the belief that Nitrosomas and Nitrobacter are the species present in nitrifying systems in freshwater aquaria.

I was wondering about "pro-biotic" additives like Immune Plus. What are in those and how do those bacteria help prevent disease? it says they compete with disease organisms, but for what? some also say they help oxygenate water. how is that so, are they photosynthetic micro-algae?
