I stopped at Peoria Il Pet Smart this evening, just to pick up some frozen bloodworms. When I was standing at the check out, I noticed a freshwater aquarium in the managers office, must have been about a 35 gallin or so tank.Large rocks for decor, overall a good looking tank. Herein lies the problem, It was stocked with 4 or 5 really big cichlids. I cant fathom how a store that claims to be Pet Friendly would have a manager torturing fish. When I asked about them, the employee at the register told me that they were not for sale and are the managers personal fish. Although I can apprieciate the man loving fish, I cannot tolerate him torturing them. I will not shop there, until this issue is resolved, I will be making a phone call to him tomorrow to see what can be done, If anyone in the Peoria area would like to join me in this endeavor please do. More voices will scream much much louder than one

Unfortunately there is not much you can do in a situation like this. People do what they do and there is no law that says he can't do what he is doing. You can speak to him if you must but my guess is he most likely will not listen to you and your concerns. The only thing we can do is inform ourselfs of the proper way to care for our little(and in some cases large) finned friends. We know that we are taking good care of our fish. It is a large chain and even if you take your business elsewhere, it won't say much because there are so many more people that will keep fish the way he does out of ignorance and just not knowing any better or they just don't care and do what they want.

Good luck when you speak to him. I hope he listens.

If you look up the website MonsterFishKeepers (or something like that) you will see a lot of people with similar (and often far worse) set ups. This person is not alone and he may actually be proud of the setup. :(

Just out of curiosity - why do you say these fish are being tortured? Too many? Not enough space? Those are my guesses, but I'm just curious to hear your explanation of it.

yeah, because they are being stunted in such a small tank, and have little room to move around

If you search these forums you will find countless threads on this. Fish do grow to the size of thier environments the same way any other animal would. Thier outter growth becomes stunted yet thier organs continue to grow, thier muscles do not develop properly from lack of excersise, the will live shortened lives and likely die of some physical condition. Beyond this, cichlids are territorial fish, and will have the added stress of being cramped, as well as the inevitable fights that break out.

And all this is assuming they do not die from poor water conditions that, unless he is doing major water changes, will be a constant in the tank.

I never said those folks don't know what they are doing - many of them seem very knowledgeable and seem to be keeping their fish in good health. What I meant was many of their tanks are highly stocked and are not the type of setups that most fishkeepers can have or should try. No jabs at MFK from me - just a different view on the hobby is all. :dance2:

Hey RWspear...good to see a fellow Peorian on the board. there seem to be more and more of us around. I was just in Petsmart Sat picking up some otos. Never have checked out the managers office, lol.
My daughter applied for a job there last summer. They were interested in hiring her when they found out we had fishtanks, but lost interest when she told them they were mine. She still knows more than some of the people they have working there, trust me.
I asked if they had CO2 equipmemnt one time just to see the reaction I would get...the blank stare was rather gratifying.

Yes there does seem to be lots of Peorians on board.... I think its a good thing, the door was standing open to his office by the checkout, couldnt help but notice, it is a nice looking tank but way overstocked. I have bought all of my live plants there, and have had great luck with them. If it wasnt a personal tank, but a comercial tankin the office i wouldnt have thought twice about it as fish usually move fairly quickly.

good to talk to you nurse
