does anyone know what species i can mix with these fish? so far, i had two unsuccessful attempts. . .an otocinclus (that disappeared) and a guppy (that was partiall eaten). please help. thanks.

dwarf puffers, most puffers for that matter, are not recommended for community tanks. They are usually kept in species-only tanks because they are notorious for being nippy and biting their tank mates to the point of stress/illness/death. While many report they do well with otocincluses, I would not risk it with my dp's. They are constantly chasing each other, so that I have to plant my tank heavily to break up the lines of sight (12 medium/large plants in 10 gal, for 2 itty bitty dwarf puffers). I have 2 ghost shrimp in there for clean-up crew, and am surprised they haven't eaten or killed them yet.

for more information on dwarf puffers, go to www.dwarfpuffers.com and there is a forum there where you can ask specific questions about your dp's. I'm a member there, too, but I'm not gonna tell you my username :)

I have two dwarf puffers in a planted 5gal with two African Dwarf Frogs and an oto and they all get along fine. Occasionaly the puffers will nip at each other a little, but rarely, and never anything severe. They all seem to do quite well together too, and not mind each other much. One of the braver puffers and one of the braver frogs now even come up to eat bloodworms from my fingers when its lunch time :)

yeah, dp's are all very individual. Like some will attack or eat shrimp on sight, but mine totally ignore ghost shrimp. I would definitely say that they won't go well with a guppy, though. They love to chomp fins, and those flowing fins and slower-moving fish would be too much of an invitation.

I have 4 oto's in my community tank and am very fond of them. Too fond of them to risk them with my puffers. Some dp's will harass and tear up the fins of oto's, as one recent member in dwarfpuffers.com reported. I guess you just never know until you try. But, like I said, I don't even want to risk it as I'm very protective of my oto's. They're so cute and harmless that they really don't deserve any kind of harassment.
