I saw the post regarding euthanizing Pacu's, but the thread was closed.
I already have two Pacu's that have been rescued due to thier size. I have also had the most requests for rescue of Pacu's compared to any other fish. I turned down the last few because they were pretty far from me, but really, I just have no room. The common case is mistaken identity for the Silver Dollar. I also have one of those, so I can tell the difference, but I can understand the confusion. I think they need to start a tank at a public aquariums to house Pacu's. Have like a 10,000 gallon tank full of them.
In reality, though, education is the most important thing. If people (especially, staff at your LFS) are aware of these type of fish that start off small and then require large tanks as adults, this problem would be avoided to begin with.
