Does anyone know a material good for Java Moss Wall? Ive been looking at Home Depot and OSH store but the sizes 1" x 1" PVC mesh. Can anyone help please?
There is a plastic mesh that you can buy at AC Moore that is used in a variety of craft venues. I have seen that used with good results.
I have an article on Java Moss Walls, but danged if I can find it right now.....I'll keep looking.

Do you know where I can buy thIS PLAStic mesh? I went to AC Moore but couldnt find the mesh material. I have emailed them and still waiting for their reply. Home Depot and OSH here in California doesnt have one. Thanks!
If you read the text on the site I linked you to carefully, it says the 'mesh' is the kind that people use to keep mosquitoes out of their houses. I took this to mean plain old plastic screening. I think thats what they're talking about.
It is available at all hardware stores.

You can buy it at walmart in the fabric department. Just ask them, they will point you in the right direction, there are tons of colors so you could pick up black or green.

I was wondering about this because the size of the mesh that was mentioned is 7mm x 7mm. Now, this is too large for a mosquitoes and even flies can go in. So I went to OSH and Home Depots mosquitoes screen section and the sizes of the holes are about 2mm even less which is impossible for the Java Moss to grow out. There are 4-7mm sizes but it doesnt come in plastic or pvc. I try my luck at Walmart tomorrow. Thanks for the replies!
Let us know how you make out, because now I'm confused as well as to what they're talking about.

I went to Walmart yesterday as hylaChristine mentioned in her thread here and found the plastic mesh at the fabric/ art section. The mesh measures 340mm X 570mm. The square grids are just 2mmx2mm which I guess are pretty small for the Java Moss to thrive well.
I found one website, usplastic.com. and ordered the item no. 84005. Its a diamond shape patterns intead of squares but I think the hole sizes are just fine.
I will post when I recieved the item.
This is what I'm going to do for my back wall of Java moss.
I'm going to use regular black plastic screening and weave fishing line in and out in rows about 1/2" apart. I will start with a loose weave and tuck the moss under each loop, then tighten the loops down from each end to hold the moss in place.
This is a bit tedious, and I wouldn't do it in say a 55 gal. tank, but I think it will work in a 10 or 5.5 gal. tank.

Though the DIY article shows you how to do it I highly recommend you tilt the bottom a littlebit so the moss at the bottom gets enough light.
An experienced friend said it works but you need to get the angle right or the bottom starts dying off.

Can you please tell me what specific black plastic screening material are you using?

Have you got a good mesh material for making this Java Moss Wall?

If you have a couple of watt/gal. of fluorescent lighting, particularly CF lighting, your moss should do fine without any tilting. It doesn't need much light to grow.

The material I'll use is plain plastic window screen that I've used for re-screening windows. I've got a bunch of excess laying around.
The moss will not have to grow through it. I intend to mount it on it.:)

Not a bad idea.
I will use the mesh I bought from Walmart as a back layer for the Moss. about 2mm X 2mm, very small holes and I'll use the 6-8mm mesh layer on the front for the moss to grow through it.

Do you know how to upload a pic from this thread? I have done my Java Moss Wall. I wanted to share the photo.
my friend has almost 3wpg and the bottom part of his walls were always dying off ... took him a while to get the trick down.

All the power heads, heaterstat, C02, overhang filter, etc for my tank was relocated to both sides to give way to the full moss wall. Dont leave a gap between the mesh and the side walls & bottom of the substrate. My neon slip inside thru the gap once behind the mesh wall and couldnt find its way out.
