Can I unplug the filter for 8 hours while I sleep. Or would that be bad? Will the bacteria on the filter material die?

Is there any other filtraton on this tank and is this an air powered corner filter of some kind, or just an air bubbler? What size is your tank? You can pick up a cheap power filter at wal-mart I think the 10 gal size is around 10-15 bucks.

First what kind of filter is it? If it is a HOB or Hand on Back filter try to raise the water level. This will normally stop the trickling noise that they make. Yes it will hurt to turn the filter off. The water will get stale and when you turn it on in the morning you will end up with a nasty film on the top of the water. Also if you have no other filter system then your water will not get filtered as it should be. Some filters allow for you to adjust the amount of water coming out, which in turn will make it alittle quieter. A good HOB filter is an AC or AquaClear filter. They tend to be pretty quiet and work very well. If you have a PetSmart in your area go to there site and printout the price for one then take it there, they will pricematch it. After you answer the questions posted we may be able to help better.

A box filter that runs off an air pump. It makes lots of air bubbles and that makes noise the bubbles popping. The air pump has a humm.

Yeah I should have bought a hob in the first place. I have a hob in my room also and its much quieter. I'm trying to get this to work though. Maybe I'll put the air pump on the 55g.

I've found that if you stuff just a little bit of filter floss in the part where the bubbles come out, it breaks up the bubbles making them smaller, wich makes it quiter. I don't use this kind of filter anymore, for the noise reason, but recently thought this up and it works in practice, provided that you don't use too much filter floss.

For the air pump hum, try putting a piece of foam or folded fabric underneath to absorb the vibrations...

Just hang the air pump. :)
If you can, you'll see a huge difference. I just use a regular piece of rope, the pump does not touch anything. It is as quiet as these things get.
