Do Bettas Like Hydroponic Plants in their Bowls?

I was given a male betta fish in a smallish fishbowl. It's definitely not the cup size, but a fairly average size bowl. I've just added a dumbcane to it, and I'm not sure if he likes it better or worse. He seems to sometimes get stuck under the roots and is not always smart enough to just swim around to the other side of the bowl. Should I even bother with this plant? He is a work fish, so I can't be moving a big aquarium into the office. I want him to be as happy as possible in his new home. I'd be willing to find a larger fish bowl if that would help. What I really want to know is what does a "happy" betta look like. He usually sits at the bottom of his bowl. Looks bored, but he is afterall a fish. Thanks for your insight.

Bettas are not boring fish. He needs more room. Mine are active, interactive, feisty and fun. They are inquisitive and take interest in their surroundings (surf in bubbles or current, swim all around the live plants, watch my every move). They recognize me, take food from my fingers, and challenge my boyfriend by flaring their gills.

and yeah, you need to be in FW as bettas are not marine.
