Hi,
This is terribly embarrassing from one who should know better...

My hubby put some NON QT'D Peacocks in his 75g 2 weeks ago. Now, we have ich. So, I bumped up temp - will bring it up to 85 by tomorrow, added 2 cups aquarium salt - that's 1 teaspoon per gallon, and will add more salt in 12 hours. Oh, I also added an extra airstone and lowered the water level. Now for the tricky bit...

I was watching the fish for stress and noticed that one of his bosemani was swimming in starts and fits. As I looked closer, there is something sticking out of his side. It is translucent, and about 1/8 inch long. I cannot see a head or anything. Question, should I add some PraziPro? (For flukes) OR should I add some levimasole (for nematodes)? I can't tell what the heck that thing is. It is not hanging from the gill area, it is poking right out of his side.

Help?
Cathy

(Ammonia 0, Nitrites 0, Nitrates 10, temp is 81 now, 30% weekly water changes including vaccuum gravel every other week, he has assorted rainbows and peacocks, and one fire eel, Emporor filter - the bio wheel thing. Tank has been and running for 9months and is in good shape. I am sure the problem came from those non QT'd Peacocks that he bought at the cichlid convention 2 weeks ago...)

Well, we tried to pull whatever that thing is out. Couldn't get a hold of it with the tweezers and probably stressed the fish in a major way. Been doing some research - Jungle Parasite tabs might be the answer. Does anyone know if it can be used with salt and heat?

I have 2 extra airstones in the tank now - one of which is really a bubble wand. Temp is holding at 86, fish do not seem bothered by the heat. I'll add another 2 cups of salt tomorrow night - bringing it to 2 tbls per gallon.

Well day 2 is over - tank holding steady at 89 degrees, very little white spots are visible! I will be putting in another 2 cups of salt - making it 2 tablespoons per gallon. So far, only one fatality - that was one of the siamese algae eaters I discovered before I noticed the white spots on his fish.
The bosemani with the thing sticking out its side is doing fine - never did figure out what that was... but it is gone today and there is only a little mark on his skin/scales to show that there was ever anything going on with him.

Just got back from the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. Really a neat place to go. I have GOT to set up another tank for some geophagus! (Part of the Amazonian exhibit)

Oops - I meant 2 teasp. per gallon... so for a 75g tank, thats 24 tablespoons, which amounts to 2 cups of salt... I've added 2 cups, 2 times now so its at 2 teasp. per gallon. I don't think I'll add any more. I have read you can add up to 1 tablespoon per gallon - but I don't think that much will be necessary at 88 degrees...

Hope I didn't cause anyone undo alarm! Here is the article I was following...
