Hi- ok, so my SAE definitely enjoy flake food. Should I be at all worried that they might have eaten my Amano shrimp? I had about 5 of them. I know they tend to keep themselves scarce but there is really no trace of them. Since they've gone missing about a month ago I've also added an angelfish and two honey gourami.. would really like to have more Amano shrimpies, would this be a bad idea? :look:

I haven't seen my SAEs go after shrimp. When did you get the angel? I'd suspect it before the others.

if you might have a Chinese algae eater, they will eat meat especially as they get older/bigger. like, they will chase down fish and chomp on their scales, fins, or mucus.

if you're sure it's an SAE, many herbivorous fish enjoy a little meat to change things up. i've read of otos that will eat worms sometimes! a couple of my otos will occasionally eat flakes and nibble at the bottom feeder wafers (both of which list fish meal as their first ingredient). i guess everyone could use a little protein :)

don't worry about it. i don't think it will cause any digestive problems. meat is significantly easier to digest than plant material, so carnivores that consume plant stuff will sometimes get bloated bellies (like bettas), but the other way around is much less likely to cause a problem.

Angel entered after the shrimp disappeared. Not a trace! So what's the consensus on keeping shrimp with angels? I just want some more algae clean-up help if I can't solve things with the Flourish products (40 g planted) but the Amanos are too wonderful to sacrifice as feeders! p.s. yes they are genuine SAE, gottem from ****************...

i wholeheartedly agree. i think angels could possibly eat shrimpies, but am not sure. maybe you should address this question to the Cichlid section, as angels are cichlids.

i'm glad you have true SAE's. they're a much better choice :)

as for the missing shrimps, i've had ghosties that also "disappeared". i think most likely they die for whatever reason (i was having ammonia/nitrite issues) and their bodies get eaten by the fish. i found 1 ghost corpse with all its legs pulled off. it's weird because when they're alive, my fish totally ignore them.

I had cherry shrimp and added a full grown angel. within 2 nights she had hunted down all my shrimp and then went after my smaller fish. Some Gouramis are known to eat shrimp too, but none of mine ever have. If you want shrimp you could buy the cheap ones at the pet store (like 10 for a dollar) and keep your tank really well planted and maybe they might survive, but its unlikely with that angel.
