Northstar is sending me one of his fluval 404's that i'm going to use on my 45g. but its rated for a tank twice that size. Dougall thinks i will need to slow down the flow a bit and suggested i stick the outflow hose into a UGF and diffuse the flow from the canister that way. this would be fine, since i already have a UGF plate for the tank. however, i want to use shults aquatic plant soil, since its all i can find locally, and have the tank heavily planted.

i'm planning on some rather delicate plants like madagascar lace and ammannia senegalensis, so i don't want to ruin my chances of being sucessfull with these plants. would having a RFUGF disrupt the plants, and since the shults aquatic soil is so light, could i layer similar sized gravel on top of it to keep it down? would doing all this slow down the flow of the filter TOO much?

or should i just find some other way to marginally slow down the flow of the filter? if so, some suggestions would be appreciated.

i wouldnt use undergravel filter for planted as it might suck all the ferts taht in the substrate.
to reduce the flow
isnt there like a flow control on the filter? if not you could make the spray pipe really long and have lots of big holes.

that's what i thought. the fluval northstar is sending me has no hoses, so i will be able to create my own intake and outflow.
